January 27, (THEWILL) – The National Orientation Agency has issued a strong warning against the dangerous practice of scooping petrol from crashed tankers, highlighting its risks to lives and property.
Speaking during an enlightenment campaign at the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State, the State Director of NOA, Mr. Mkpouto Mkpouto, described petrol scooping as both hazardous and akin to theft.
Mkpouto noted that several lives have been lost across the country due to explosions triggered by such acts. Though Akwa Ibom State has not recorded such incidents, he emphasized the need for preventive measures.
“We want to be proactive by advising people not to scoop or steal petrol from crashed tankers. If it ever happens in Akwa Ibom, please stay away. Once you see petrol flowing from a tanker, the best thing to do is run for your dear life,” Mkpouto said.
In addition, the NOA director commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for its swift intervention in curbing the recent cholera outbreak in Emeroke, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area.
He attributed the outbreak to poor sanitation and lack of access to clean water in the affected community.
“Cholera is not an airborne disease; it can be prevented with proper hygiene. Open defecation and poor sanitation are major contributors to its spread. Everyone should have a functional toilet system, and we must discourage open defecation while maintaining clean environments,” he advised.
Mkpouto also urged residents to promptly report any disease outbreaks to health authorities, noting that the state government’s quick response helped contain the recent cholera spread.
“The government’s timely intervention ensured the outbreak did not escalate. We must remain vigilant, especially in coastal areas where water sources can be contaminated,” he added.
The NOA director further cautioned against the indiscriminate location of gas stations in residential areas, citing the potential danger to lives and property.
He urged operators to strictly adhere to government guidelines to prevent avoidable tragedies.
“Our goal is to keep the public informed and ensure safety in all aspects of life. Together, we can build a safer and healthier society,” Mkpouto concluded.
