May 28, (THEWILL) – The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria has demanded a thorough investigation into the killing of a Divisional Police Officer, CSP Baba Ali, by a mob in Rano town, Rano Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement, disclosing that the attack occurred after the arrest of a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, who was allegedly riding recklessly under the influence of drugs.
Police spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the suspect was taken into custody but later exhibited signs of weakness. He was rushed to the Rano General Hospital, where he died on May 26 around 6am while receiving treatment.
“Following the incident, miscreants mobilised and launched an attack on the Rano Police Division. Parts of the station and two vehicles were set ablaze, while 10 other vehicles were vandalised. The DPO was seriously injured in the attack and later died at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,” Kiyawa said.
Reacting to the development, the National President of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, Isah Abubakar, condemned the attack and described the death of CSP Baba Ali as a tragic national loss.
“CSP Baba Ali served with dedication and integrity. His commitment to peace and security must be recognised and remembered,” Abubakar said in a statement on Tuesday.
He called on the Federal Government to initiate an impartial investigation into the incident and urged all relevant agencies to collaborate in uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the officer’s death. He also stressed the importance of keeping the public and the victim’s family informed throughout the process.
“The death of CSP Baba Ali underscores the urgent need for united efforts against mob violence. Government must act decisively to prevent similar tragedies,” he added.
