April 13, (THEWILL) — Leeds United put significant daylight between themselves and the English Premier League’s bottom three with a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Noah Okafor was the decisive figure, netting twice before the half-hour mark. The forward capitalised on a wayward headed clearance from Leny Yoro to open the scoring shortly after Dominic Calvert-Lewin had wasted a gilt-edged opportunity in the third minute. Okafor then added a second with a volley from outside the area after the home defence failed to deal with a ball into the box.
Ao Tanaka nearly extended the visitors’ lead on the stroke of half-time, only for Lisandro Martinez to clear his effort off the line. The Argentine’s afternoon took a dramatic turn in the 56th minute, however, when a VAR review resulted in a straight red card for pulling Calvert-Lewin’s hair.
Reduced to 10 men, United began to threaten. Casemiro gave the home side renewed hope in the 69th minute, meeting a Bruno Fernandes cross to head beyond the goalkeeper and cut the deficit.
United pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages but Calvert-Lewin proved influential at both ends of the pitch, clearing a Casemiro header off the line in the 85th minute before blocking the follow-up from Manuel Ugarte to preserve Leeds’ three points.
