SAN FRANCISCO, February 14, (THEWILL) – THE late Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1, who died on January 19, 2016 at the age of 101, has been buried in his compound at Igbo Elerin, Ibadan.
According to reports, the family of the late king had earlier prepared a graveyard at St Peter, Aremo but later discovered that the late monarch had included in his will that he should be buried in his compound at Igbo Elerin.
The late Olubadan, who ascended the throne in 2007, following the demise of Yunusa Ogundipe Arapasowu I, was the oldest of the 40 monarchs to have presided over the kingdom.
A retired soldier, teacher and politician, Oba Odugade was a strict nonsense monarch who reportedly deposed Olusegun Ojetade, one of his revered chiefs, for lacing a deadly anti-adultery charm, called “magun”, on his wife.
He was appointed parliamentary secretary to the late Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and was minster of state for labour and in 1964.
A funeral service, in his honour, was held at the Cathedral of Saint Peter, Aremo, Ibadan before the remains was taken for interment.
Prominent Nigerians at the funeral service includes Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo who represented President Muhammadu Buhari; Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State; Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode; and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State.
Others includes Deputy Governor of Anambra, Mr. Nkem Okeke; former Governors of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and Dr. Omololu Olunloyo; Minister of Communication, Mr. Adebayo Shittu; High Chief Lekan Balogun, member of Olubadan-in-Council; all the children of the monarch led by Prof. Femi Lana; a former Governor of old Oyo State, General David Jemibewon(rtd); a former Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith; some traditional chiefs and many others.
