January 19, (THEWILL) – A violent clash between the communities of Omege Agalagu and Ukwuinyima in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has left one person dead and several houses destroyed.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, also left many injured as suspected hoodlums launched attacks in the area.
Although the exact cause of the crisis remains unclear, a community source linked the violence to unresolved tensions stemming from a November 2024 incident.
The source claimed that the burial of a woman who was allegedly raped and killed in the area had rekindled hostilities between the two communities.
“More than 10 houses and property worth millions of naira have been burnt to ashes. The government needs to act swiftly,” the source said.
Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the death of one person in the clash.
According to Ukandu, the violence began after two youths from the warring communities engaged in a fight, during which one of them, from Omege, was stabbed.
“He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries,” Ukandu said.
Following his death, members of the victim’s community reportedly retaliated by attacking Omege and setting fire to several houses.
Most of the destroyed structures were mud houses with thatch roofs.
“The Police intervened promptly to prevent further damage and restore order,” Ukandu stated, adding that the suspect who stabbed the victim has been arrested.
He also noted that the Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are maintaining security in the affected communities to prevent an escalation.
Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information, Jude Okpor, acknowledged the clash, describing it as a misunderstanding between two youths that spiraled into a communal crisis.
“It was an unfortunate incident that has been brought under control,” Okpor said.
He assured residents that the state government is working with security agencies to ensure peace and prevent further occurrences.
The commissioner called on the affected communities to embrace dialogue and urged residents to report grievances to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence.
