July 14, (THEWILL) — Benue State governor, Revd Fr Hyacinth Alia, has asserted that the creation of a State Police is critical for effective tackling of security challenges faced by states.
He said such an initiative would also significantly enhance the enforcement of the anti-Open Grazing and Ranches Establishment Law, empowering local authorities to respond decisively to community security concerns.
Governor Alia’s position was articulated by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Barr. Fidelis Mnyim, at the public hearing on the review of Nigeria’s 1999 constitution as amended, held in Lafia, Nasarawa State, for the North Central zone, including Benue, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory.
He pointed out the inherent limitations placed on state governors who are serving as Chief Security Officers, but often lack the necessary authority to engage security agencies swiftly to ensure the safety of their jurisdictions.
The Justice Commissioner, who reiterated the governor’s strong endorsement of establishing State Police, noted that such an initiative is essential and was highlighted during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Benue State, where he offered condolences to the Yelwata community following the tragic killings of local farmers by herdsmen.
He further stressed the urgent need for electoral reforms to fortify Nigeria’s democracy, arguing that many issues surrounding pre-election and post-election disputes arising from the existing constitutional framework complicate the fair administration of justice in the electoral petitions.
On Benue’s abundant mineral wealth, he said the country is rich with about 44 mineral resources, with Benue State having all 44, with 36 in high commercial quantities and is proactively seeking legislative measures to enhance its economy and promote sustainable development.
He reaffirmed the Benue State government’s position in supporting the House of Representatives Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution to achieve legislative initiatives that would advance true federalism while opposing any measures that threaten it.
