April 05, (THEWILL) — Goals from Nigerian forwards, Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu, handed Trabzonspor a 2-1 victory over Galatasaray at Papara Park on Saturday, lifting the Black Sea club to one point behind their Istanbul rivals at the summit of the Trendyol Süper Lig.
Onuachu opened the scoring inside four minutes, heading home from Wagner Pina’s cross. Galatasaray, missing Victor Osimhen through a broken arm and Leroy Sané through suspension, drew level shortly after half-time when defender Wilfried Singo converted a header from Barış Alper Yılmaz’s delivery. Nwaiwu restored Trabzonspor’s lead on 62 minutes with a close-range finish assisted by Anthony Nwakaeme.
The victory takes Trabzonspor to 63 points from 28 matches, one behind Galatasaray, who have played a game less. Cameroonian goalkeeper, André Onana, made important saves late on to preserve the home side’s advantage.
Together, two Nigerians, Onuachu and Nwaiwu, defined a contest that Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk, whose side had gone several weeks unbeaten, will find difficult to explain given his team’s statistical dominance.
A title that had appeared to be Galatasaray’s to collect is now fully contested, and the Black Sea club head into the run-in on a six-match winning run and with belief to match.
