May 10, (THEWILL) – Former US men’s national football team player, Oguchi Onyewu, has been appointed as the new Vice President of Sporting for the US Soccer Federation.
In his new role, Onyewu will work closely with Sporting Director, Matt Crocker, in managing relationships with clubs and leagues across the globe, supporting all sporting initiatives within the federation. His first order of business will be to assist Crocker in the hiring of the next US men’s national team coach.
Crocker expressed his excitement about Onyewu’s appointment, saying: “His experience as a player and sports executive, coupled with his deep understanding of US Soccer, Oguchi will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our sporting initiatives. We all look forward to working closely with him.”
Onyewu, who retired from playing in 2018, has since served as the Sporting Director for Orlando City B and as the Secretary-General for Royal Excelsior Virton. He was upfront about his enthusiasm for taking this new challenge for the men’s national team.
“I look forward to working with the Men’s and Women’s Senior Teams, Youth National Teams and Extended National Teams to help support and grow our talented pool of players and identify and develop the next generation,” Onyewu said.
