December 04, (THEWILL) – Liverpool profited from Chelsea’s slip-up in the title race on Saturday, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in injury time at Molineux to climb above the Blues by a single point.
As THEWILL reported, in the day’s early kick-off, Chelsea were defeated 3-2 by West Ham, giving the Reds the chance to go top before Manchester City’s match against Watford later on Sunday evening.
Liverpool returned to Merseyside with three points thanks to a 95th-minute winner from substitute Divock Origi.
Thiago dinked one over the top of the Wolves defence for Trent Alexander-Arnold to run onto just before the 30-minute mark, but he skied his effort and the chance went begging.
Liverpool came alive after that, putting additional pressure on their opponents. Before Alexander-Arnold crossed for Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah created a couple of openings on the edge of the Wolves box, but he could not keep his close-range header on target.
And the Reds were denied a certain lead moments later as Romain Saiss just about came back in time to divert Andy Robertson’s cross away from goal.
Wolves came closest to opening the scoring in the first half with a Rayan Ait-Nouri cross that almost reached Adama Traore, but Alisson got his body in front of it, and the teams headed into halftime equal.
Just after halftime, Liverpool missed another chance to seize the lead. Salah volleyed a high Alexander-Arnold corner into the six-yard box for Thiago. Raul Jimenez blocked the Spaniard’s original shot on the line, and Jose Sa instinctively rebounded it.
Hwang Hee-Chan almost put Wolves ahead against the run of play when he set up Leander Dendoncker, but Alisson denied the Belgian.
At the other end, Sa cleaned out Saiss to allow Jota through on goal, but the former Wanderers forward somehow managed to fire right into Conor Coady when given an age to choose literally any area he wanted.
To keep the fixture goalless, Max Kilman got his body in front of an Origi shot, and Sa made a superb reflex stop to keep Mane out.
Salah swivelled away from Ruben Neves and found space for a low shot, but Sa was up to the task once more.
But, Salah managed to pick out Origi in the 95th minute, and the Belgian striker shot past the Wolves goalkeeper to complete a late yet spectacular victory for the Reds.
