May 14, (THEWILL) – Amid widespread outrage over candidates’ poor performance in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Wednesday admitted to errors.
THEWILL reports that over 1.5 million, out of the 1.9 million candidates who sat for this year’s UTME, scored below 200 out of a possible 400 marks, prompting public outcry
Earlier, JAMB spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said the board plans a review, which will “scrutinise the registration, examination, and result release stages to identify potential technical issues”.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, confirmed that some technical errors affected the credibility of the results.
Noting that the error affected candidates in some states, Oloyede said about 379,997 candidates in the five states of the South East geographical zone and Lagos were affected by the glitches.
According to him, while 206,610 candidates in Lagos are to retake the exam, 173,387 candidates are to rewrite it in the South East states of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Anambra.
Taking full responsibility for the negligence of his staff, Oloyede revealed that 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres in the Owerri Zone covering the five states in the South East would rewrite the exam.
“It was a combination of human error and technology. We are sincerely sorry”, he said.
