September 01, (THEWILL) — A powerful earthquake and a series of aftershocks have killed more than 800 people and injured at least 1,500 in eastern Afghanistan.
The Taliban’s Interior Ministry said the 6.0-magnitude quake struck just before midnight on Sunday, shaking buildings as far as Kabul and Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.
The epicentre was recorded about 27km from Jalalabad in Nangarhar Province, at a shallow depth of 8km, a factor that intensified the destruction.
Aftershocks rattled the region through the night, including a 5.2-magnitude tremor around 4:00 a.m. local time.
Authorities reported that at least 810 people were killed and 1,300 injured in Kunar Province, while 12 deaths and 255 injuries were confirmed in neighbouring Nangarhar.
Hundreds of homes were flattened, leaving many residents trapped beneath the rubble.
Rescue operations are underway, with Taliban authorities coordinating with United Nations emergency teams to deliver aid to the worst-hit areas.
