August 01, (THEWILL) — Joao Palhinha will undergo a medical with Tottenham Hotspur in Germany on Friday as he finalises a season-long loan move from Bayern Munich. The deal includes an option for Spurs to make the transfer permanent for €30 million (£25.9 million), with the club covering his full wages during the loan. The 30-year-old midfielder became available after falling down the pecking order at Bayern, where he started just 10 of his 25 appearances last season.
Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham in 2024 for €51 million but struggled to establish himself under Vincent Kompany, competing with Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Aleksandar Pavlovic, and Konrad Laimer for minutes. Bayern’s recent signing of Tom Bischof further reduced his prospects, prompting the Bundesliga champions to sanction his departure. Tottenham, seeking midfield reinforcement, opted for a loan structure to assess his fit before committing to a permanent deal.
The Portugal international previously impressed during his two-year spell at Fulham, earning their Player of the Season award in his debut campaign. His combative style and EPL experience made him an attractive target for Spurs, who have already signed Mohammed Kudus, Luka Vuskovic, Kota Takai, and Mathys Tel this summer. Palhinha’s arrival would provide depth in a key area as Tottenham prepare for UEFA Champions League football under new manager Thomas Frank.
This marks the second transaction between Tottenham and Bayern in recent months, following Tel’s permanent switch after a successful loan. Spurs had also pursued Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, but the midfielder opted to sign a new contract instead. Palhinha’s move is now expected to proceed without complications, pending the completion of his medical.
Should the transfer be finalised, Palhinha will become Tottenham’s fifth summer signing as they continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season. His addition addresses a need for midfield steel, offering Frank a proven option alongside Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr.
