February 22, (THEWILL) — Parma earned a 1-0 win over AC Milan at San Siro on Sunday, bringing the hosts’ 24-match unbeaten run in Serie A to an abrupt end and dealing a significant blow to their championship prospects.
Milan controlled large periods of the contest without converting their chances. Christian Pulisic fired a tight-angled effort straight at goalkeeper, Edoardo Corvi, before lifting a follow-up attempt over the bar shortly before the interval. After the break, a low drive from the American was also cleared off the line by Mariano Troilo. Rafael Leao rattled the woodwork with a volley from Adrien Rabiot’s cross, yet Parma’s backline stood firm.
The visitors made their resistance count in the 80th minute. Troilo climbed above his marker to direct Emanuele Valeri’s corner into the far post, giving Parma the lead against the run of play.
The goal was initially disallowed following a foul call on goalkeeper Mike Maignan, but a VAR review concluded that defender Lautaro Valenti had not impeded Maignan, and the decision was overturned to allow the goal to stand.
Milan’s first defeat since the opening weekend of the season leaves them 10 points behind the Serie A leaders, with their title challenge now looking increasingly distant.
