February 11, (THEWILL) – The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed the purported suspension of the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, by the Abia State chapter, describing it as illegal and of no effect.
The party urged its leaders, stakeholders, and supporters in Abia State, the South-East zone, and across the country to disregard the suspension, insisting that the Abia PDP lacked the power to take such action.
The Abia State PDP had on Tuesday announced Wabara’s suspension over alleged anti-party activities.
However, reacting in a statement on Tuesday evening, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the suspension violated the party’s constitution and could not stand.
According to him, no State Working Committee has the authority to suspend or discipline a member of the National Executive Committee without recourse to the NWC, as provided in Section 57 (7) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
Quoting the section, he said, “Notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no Executive Committee at any level, except the National Executive Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governors or members of the National Assembly.”
He further explained that this provision means that the Abia PDP has no legal authority to suspend Senator Wabara, given his position as a BoT Chairman and NEC member.
The PDP described the suspension as reckless and unconstitutional, warning those behind it to retrace their steps or risk facing disciplinary action from the NWC.
“The NWC calls on all leaders, critical stakeholders, members, and supporters of our party in Abia State, the South-East Zone, and across the country to disregard the purported suspension,” the statement read.
