July 29, (THEWILL) — The Presidency has defended the cash, apartments and national honours bestowed on the Super Falcons of Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu.
THEWILL reports that the President had, on Monday, showered cash, gifts, and conferred national honours on Nigeria’s senior female football team, the Super Falcons and the entire technical crew for winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) held in Morocco.
Receiving the players and the technical team at the Presidential Villa on Monday in Abuja, President Tinubu had pledged the equivalent of $100,000 in naira to each of the 24 players and an additional $50,000 to members of the technical crew, as well as a three-bedroom apartment to each of the players and technical crew.
Responding to the criticisms that followed the President’s largesse to the ladies, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said President Tinubu only rewarded excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry and the undying Nigerian spirit.
In a post on Tuesday on X, Onanuga argued that the gesture is well-deserved, especially when compared to the N150 million prize money awarded to winners of the reality TV show, Big Brother Naija.
“When you remember that Multichoice, the organiser of the BBNaija reality show, is offering the winner N150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons. President Tinubu has rewarded excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry and the undying Nigerian spirit”, the post read.
