President Muhammadu Buhari has departed New York where he attended the 73rd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for Abuja.
He departed with his wife, Aisha Buhari after the five-day trip.
While in New York, the president drew the attention of world leaders to major issues threatening global peace.
Specifically, the he drew attention to the conflicts in the Middle East, the plight of the Rohingya, and the effect of climate change on security in West Africa, among other issues.
He challenged his counterparts to embrace dialogue and collaborate to address the challenges.
On the sidelines of the General Assembly, the President also met with the Nigerian community in the US.
While addressing them and speaking of the challenges the country currently faces, he took a swipe at the elites, saying they were silent and allowed Nigeria to be mismanaged.
“They didn’t say a word,” President Buhari said, adding, “I was called Baba Go Slow. Those who were going fast, where did they get to?”.
He, however, hailed ‘ordinary Nigerians’ who he said stood by him.
Furthermore, he promised that if he was re-elected into office in 2019, he would leave a mark.
“It was mainly the ordinary people that stood by me. That is why I am always conscious of them. They are my constituency.
“Even pregnant women on the queue would fall into labour, go to have their babies, and still come back to vote for me. I will keep doing my best for the country.
“I will leave some difference in that office,” he said.
