August 12, (THEWILL) — Real Madrid have issued a scathing rejection of proposals to stage Barcelona’s December La Liga fixture against Villarreal at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
The Spanish Football Federation approved the relocation request during Monday’s meeting, though UEFA and FIFA authorisation remains pending.
Madrid’s statement condemned the plan for violating “territorial reciprocity principles” that underpin La Liga’s competitive framework.
The capital club argued that Barcelona would gain an unfair sporting advantage by avoiding Villarreal’s traditional home venue, the Estadio de la Cerámica. Madrid’s formal complaint highlighted concerns over competitive integrity, stating the proposal “compromises the legitimacy of results and sets an unacceptable precedent.”
The club warned that implementing such measures could “mark a turning point for world football” by prioritising commercial interests over sporting fairness.
Madrid demanded that any venue changes require unanimous consent from all 20 La Liga participants before proceeding.
The club has formally petitioned FIFA, UEFA, and Spain’s Higher Sports Council to block the Miami match without complete league approval.
This intervention is Madrid’s latest attempt to maintain what they consider essential competitive standards across Spanish football.
The controversy deepens existing tensions between Madrid and both Barcelona and La Liga’s governing structure.
Previous disputes have centred on scheduling decisions, broadcast arrangements, and commercial partnerships that Madrid perceives as favouring their Catalonian rivals.
