SAN FRANCISCO, January 20, (THEWILL) – Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and operator of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was on Wednesday ordered by a Federal High Court in Abuja to be remanded in prison custody. Since October 14 last year when he was arrested, Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.
He was arraigned along with two others – Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi – on a six-count charge bordering on treason and others bordering on his agitation for the secession of the Republic of Biafra from Nigeria. The three accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges preferred against them.
Justice James Tsoho in ordering the remand of the accused in prison overruled a request by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Mohammed Diri, for an order allowing the accused persons to remain in the custody of the DSS.
The court’s decision for Kanu to be rather remanded in Prison came as a relief to the defence team, led by Mr. Chuks Mouoma SAN, who had complained that the accused persons were being denied access to their families and lawyers since their arrest by the secret police last year.
