June 25, (THEWILL) – The Rivers State Police Command has declared a former Niger Delta militant leader, Gabriel ‘General’ Asabuja, wanted over alleged provocative statements in a viral video.
Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Olatunji Disu, disclosed this on Monday when he appeared on Channel Television’s ‘Politics Today’.
Asabuja was seen in a viral video making some strong comments amid the local government council crisis rocking Rivers State.
Disu, who condemned Asabuja’s actions, emphasised the panic and concern generated by his threats in the state.
“That video caused a lot of panic in the state. It gives a lot of concern to everybody even out of the state. I want to assure you that we are not going to take kindly to that. We have put actions in motion. We would get him at the appropriate time. We have gotten a lot of people of his kind.
“You cannot prepare a video and start firing and threatening people not to move around and do what they are expected to do in town and expect the police will fold their hands. We are working towards it. We have invited him and he does not want to come but we will do what we want to do. We are looking out for him.
“He is wanted. That is correct,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government said the prime suspect who accidentally detonated a dynamite near the Presidential Hotel on the Port-Harcourt-Aba Expressway during Tuesday’s protest by former chairmen of local government councils has been intercepted.
The individual, allegedly part of a group of protesters in solidarity with the former council chairmen, was intercepted at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) in Port Harcourt.
Rivers Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, who disclosed this on Tuesday night while addressing journalists at RSUTH, said the suspect was brought in by a few individuals, who presented him as an accident victim at the Accident and Emergency Ward of the hospital, but upon examination, the doctors discovered that his injuries resembled that of a blast and alerted the authorities.
She said most of the people who brought the blast suspect had disappeared and was found with only one person.
“The Commissioner of Police has been alerted and investigations have begun. As I said, the suspect was brought in unconscious but he has been stabilised and recovering at the ICU. The place has been secured by the police and proper investigation would be carried out by the police,” she said.
