The winger now spends most matchdays on the bench, often entering after 70 minutes when games are already settled.
The 24-year-old forward remains hopeful of persuading Alonso to grant him increased playing time in the months ahead, according to Spanish publication, AS. However, if his role does not expand beyond brief substitute appearances, Rodrygo intends to request a meeting with Real Madrid officials to discuss his future. The player reportedly feels he cannot waste an entire season on the sidelines, given his age and ability.
Interest from English Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, could offer Rodrygo potential escape routes should he pursue a transfer in January or next summer. His decision to remain in the Spanish capital rather than move to England earlier in his career has not yielded the expected results. The competition with Vinícius Júnior for the left-wing position represented one of his few genuine opportunities for regular minutes.
Franco Mastantuono has emerged as Alonso’s preferred option on the right flank during the opening months of the 2025/2926 season. The Argentine teenager now faces an uncertain spell on the sidelines with a groin problem, leaving space in the starting lineup. Brahim Díaz appears next in line to replace Mastantuono, though the Morocco international has managed just one goal across 13 appearances this term.
Rodrygo may view Mastantuono’s absence as his opportunity to reclaim a starting berth, albeit on the right rather than his favoured left side. The forward has not scored in competitive action for Los Blancos since March of last year, meaning any chance to impress Alonso will require a significant improvement in output. His position in the manager’s plans will depend entirely on whether he can deliver when called upon.
