May 31, (THEWILL) – Leeds United’s owner, Andrea Radrizzani, along with his partner, Matteo Manfredi, is set to take over troubled Italian soccer club, Sampdoria after the club’s shareholders approved a restructuring plan.
This development comes after Sampdoria’s recent relegation from Serie A, marking their first time outside the top division in more than ten years. The agreement entails an infusion of up to €40 million ($44 million) to stabilise the finances of the Genoa-based team, which has been struggling due to the impact of the pandemic.
The sale of Sampdoria has been in progress for over a year, primarily aimed at repaying the debts of the club’s former Chairman and owner, who is facing allegations of bankruptcy.
The sale process has been overseen by a trustee, with Lazard serving as an advisor. Radrizzani and Manfredi’s bid prevailed over a competing offer from Alessandro Barnaba, the owner of Lille Football Club.
Sampdoria, historically renowned for their success in the early 1990s when they clinched their sole national title, boasted an exceptional strike partnership of Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini. However, the club has faced significant challenges in recent years, with financial difficulties and the subsequent relegation adding to their woes.
With this restructuring plan approval, Sampdoria aims to revive its fortunes under the new ownership, as Radrizzani and Manfredi bring fresh hopes and resources to the table.
Meanwhile, Leeds United, Radrizzani’s current venture, also suffered a blow as they were relegated from the English Premier League last weekend. This development adds an extra layer of significance to Radrizzani’s investment in Sampdoria, as he looks to regain success in the football world through his involvement with the Italian club.
