February 28, (THEWILL) – The Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia announced on Wednesday, a new long-term partnership with the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). The collaboration aims to enhance and propel the future growth of professional men’s tennis globally.
Under the terms of the deal, financial details of which were not disclosed, PIF will become the official naming sponsor of the ATP Rankings. Additionally, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund will partner with ATP Tour events in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Beijing and the season-ending ATP Finals.
PIF has also extended its existing partnership with the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah through 2027. The landmark deal has divided opinion within tennis. While ATP CEO Massimo Calvelli welcomed the “major moment for tennis” and the “shared commitment to propel the future of the sport”, former champions, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, have expressed reservations given Saudi Arabia’s human rights record.
Meanwhile, current world number six Ons Jabeur has voiced support, as has reigning US Open champion Daniil Medvedev, who believes growing the sport’s exposure and appeal through external investment can only be positive.
Andy Murray raised concerns about ensuring sufficient funding reaches grassroots tennis, rather than solely benefiting elite competitions. However, the 3-time Grand Slam winner acknowledged the new partners are committed to “collaborating to elevate the long-term future of tennis”.
