July 06, (THEWILL) – A major security scare has rocked the University of Calabar, over an explosive sound at the institution’s library.
The explosive sound came from the Special Education Wing of the Library and as a result the building has been formally shut down.
A statement from the information unit of the institution said the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Florence Obi, has directed that staff and students should keep off the building, owing to the impact of the explosion.
The statement also said the management of the institution has directed the University Liberian and the Chief Security Officer to jointly ensure the urgent and total evacuation of staff, students and University properties out of the building, as well as enforce sealing of the structure.
THEWILL reports that the left wing of the library has been in a terrible state of disrepair and some students complain of structural defects on the structure, owing to poor maintenance.
Some sections of the multi-storey complex had been sealed earlier including the underground section of the building.
In view of the poor state of the structure, particularly the special education wing, the Vice Chancellor had earlier declared a state of emergency on the section of the library.
It is still unclear what caused the explosive sound on the multi Storey complex, as investigations are underway.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, said the command is not aware of it yet, but have commenced investigation into it.
