February 03, (THEWILL) — The Senate, on Tuesday, confirmed the nomination of Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, which screened the nominee and recommended his appointment.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee, Adeniyi Ayodele Adegbonmire (APC, Ondo Central), disclosed that Justice Oyewole was screened on Thursday, January 29, 2026, noting that the nominee demonstrated sound knowledge of the law and judicial competence during the exercise.
“The committee did the screening on Thursday, 29th January 2026. Questions were asked of the nominee, which he answered intelligently and accurately”, Adegbonmire said, adding that the committee thoroughly examined Justice Oyewole’s curriculum vitae and other relevant documents before reaching its conclusion.
“We recommend that the Senate approve the confirmation of the nomination of Honorable Justice Joseph Olubunmi Olukayode Oyewole, JCA, for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria”, he stated.
The Senate subsequently approved the nomination when the recommendation was put to a voice vote by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
In his remarks, Akpabio congratulated Justice Oyewole and prayed for divine wisdom as he assumes the exalted judicial office.
“I pray God to grant him the wisdom to do justice to all and sundry, irrespective of status”, the Senate President said.
Akpabio also commended President Bola Tinubu for nominating what he described as “a square peg in a square hole”, noting that the nominee’s credentials and track record made it easy for the Senate to unanimously endorse his appointment.
“I pray that through him and others already there, justice will be served to the commonest man in this country. Justice will be served even to the Senators. I pray”, Akpabio added.
