April 25, (THEWILL) — Ryan Sessegnon’s 43rd-minute goal earned Fulham a hard-fought 1-0 English Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, breathing fresh life into Marco Silva’s push for European football next season.
The result temporarily moved Fulham into the top half of the table ahead of the remaining weekend fixtures, cutting the gap to sixth-placed Brighton and Hove Albion to just two points.
Villa were the more threatening side in the opening exchanges. Morgan Rogers cut in from the right and flashed a shot narrowly wide, before Ollie Watkins also failed to convert from a promising position, with England head coach Thomas Tuchel watching on from the stands.
The home side took the lead two minutes before half-time through a fortunate sequence: Sasa Lukic’s header was well saved by Emiliano Martinez, but the rebound fell to Sessegnon, who converted from close range. Tammy Abraham offered the visitors their best chance of an equaliser seven minutes from the end, beating Joachim Andersen with a clever piece of skill before firing over the bar. Fulham held firm to claim three points that keep their European ambitions very much in play.
