SAN FRANCISCO, January 29, (THEWILL) – Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State have been offered 432 apartments where they can be resettled free of charge by the state government.
The state governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, Thursday, inaugurated an eight-man committee to distribute the free apartments to the IDPs who are currently being accommodated in different camps in the state.
However, the government said those to benefit from the apartments located at the Yerwa Peace Estate, Maiduguri are the displaced residents of Bula-Bulin Ngarnam whose houses were destroyed by the Boko Haram insurgents a few months ago.
The governor said the houses were constructed at the cost of about N700 million by a committee appointed by the state government.
According to Shettima, “Since assuming office in 2011, we have left no one in doubt about our resolute to provide housing to our teeming population as it is one of our cardinal objectives.
“We have been able to construct houses across the state in spite of the insecurity facing us.”
Inaugurating the committee to allocate the apartments in Maiduguri, Shettima said his government had launched a programme for the elimination of thatch and stalk houses across the state, noting that some success had been chalked in that area despite the insurgency.
The governor charged the committee to be fair and just in distributing the houses to the beneficiaries.
Responding on behalf of the committee members, the chairman, Alhaji Kaka Lawan, expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity given to them to serve the state, promising to to be fair and just in the allocation process.
