October 29, (THEWILL) – World number one tennis player, Jannik Sinner, has withdrawn from the Paris Masters indoor tournament due to an intestinal virus, organisers confirmed on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old Italian, who sealed the year-end top ranking in mid-October, will be replaced by French qualifier, Arthur Cazaux. The replacement player will face either Corentin Moutet or American, Ben Shelton, in the second round on Tuesday.
Tournament officials stated that Sinner had contracted the illness before arriving in Paris. This marks his second consecutive withdrawal from the event, following his exit at the same stage in 2023. His focus now shifts to the Masters in Turin (November 10-17) and the Davis Cup finals in Malaga, where Italy will defend their title.
The Italian star has had an outstanding 2024, claiming his first two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and US Open. His success extends to seven tournament victories this year, including three Masters 1000 titles in Miami, Cincinnati and Shanghai.
However, Sinner faces potential suspension following a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appeal, which emerged several weeks ago. The case remains under investigation.
