
…as Banks, Schools, Markets, Shopping Malls Shut Down In Owerri
Residents of Owerri, the Imo State capital, have been thrown into fear, following last Saturday’s tragedy that struck the Umuguma Divisional Police Station, in Owerri West Local Government Area of the State.
It would be recalled some yet-to-be identified gunmen razed the station wherein two Police officers on duty lost their lives; including property worth millions of Naira were destroyed during the attack.
Similarly, unknown gunmen on Saturday, attacked the country home of the President-General, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Prof. George Obiizor, in Awo Omama, Oru East Local Government Area.
Although, no life was lost in the incident, our Correspondent who went round, gathered that the roof of the brown-coloured building was heavily burnt.
The incident appears to have returned the sit-at-home order to Imo as commercial banks, private cum public schools and markets, were shut down on Monday, March 21, 2022.
Meanwhile, the Imo State Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, has condemned the attacks by those he described as political bandits.
In a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, the Governor regretted that desperate politician, who believe in violence were yet to sheath their swords in spite of repeated appeal to that effect.
Uzodinma described the attack on the country home of Prof. Obiozor as cowardly and the height of desperation.
He vowed that the government was already working in concert with security agencies to identify and punish the perpetrators.
He bemoaned the incessant resort to violence in settling political differences by some politicians in the state, and warned that the government would no longer condone such banditry.
The statement maintained that the time of those who unleashed the kind of mayhem in the state is over.
“We shall hunt them down to face the full weight of the law. I wonder why the bandits would attack the home of a man who is not a politician, but a statesman, working for the good of the entire Igbo race”, he said.
