March 20, (THEWILL) – At least six persons lost their lives, and 14 vehicles were gutted in a tragic accident that occurred in Abuja on Tuesday evening, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, in a statement on Wednesday, said the fatal crash happened around 6:58 PM before the Nyanya Bridge.
According to her, a Dangote truck loaded with cement lost control while approaching the Nyanya axis from AYA, ramming into stationary vehicles caught in traffic.
“The impact triggered a massive inferno, engulfing 14 vehicles in flames. Panic-stricken motorists and pedestrians scampered for safety as emergency responders battled thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped,” the statement read.
Adeh revealed that six victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital but were confirmed dead by medical personnel. Their remains have since been deposited at the Karu General Hospital Morgue.
She noted that police operatives, in collaboration with fire service personnel, other security agencies, and concerned individuals at the scene, worked swiftly to contain the fire and restore normal traffic flow.
The FCT Police Command expressed condolences to the victims’ families, assuring the public that a thorough investigation was underway to ascertain the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences.
“Motorists are urged to exercise caution and adhere strictly to speed limits, particularly in high-traffic zones. Road safety must be prioritized to avert tragic incidents like this,” the statement added.
The command also encouraged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report emergencies or suspicious activities using its emergency hotlines.
