August 17, (THEWILL) – South Africa remains firmly in contention to make history by hosting the prestigious Women’s World Cup in 2027.
The winning candidate will be announced in May 2024 during the 74th FIFA Congress, FIFA has revealed. With women’s football growing rapidly in popularity worldwide, the 2027 World Cup bidding race is set to be intensely competitive. Four Confederations have presented joint or individual bids to host the tournament: Belgium, Netherlands and Germany; Brazil; South Africa; and the USA and Mexico.
South Africa formally entered the race back in May 2023, meeting FIFA’s bid requirements. The final proposals must be submitted to FIFA by December 2023, followed by inspection visits in early 2024 ahead of the host announcement.
Bringing the Women’s World Cup to Africa for the first time would provide a significant boost for women’s football development across the continent. South Africa is aiming to make history by becoming the first African host of this top global tournament.
With world-class stadiums and infrastructure already in place from hosting the 2010 men’s World Cup, South Africa has a strong case to finally host World Cup football again. The 2027 tournament will be the 10th edition of the Women’s World Cup, which is held every four years.
