December 03, (THEWILL) – South Korean President, Yoon Suk Yeol, has declared a state of emergency and imposed martial law, accusing the opposition of “anti-state activities” and plotting rebellion.
In a televised address late Tuesday, Yoon stated, “I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order.”
The declaration follows a series of actions by the opposition Democratic Party, which recently pushed through a downsized budget bill in the parliamentary budget committee.
Additionally, the party submitted impeachment motions against a state auditor and the chief prosecutor.
Yoon justified the drastic move, claiming it was necessary to safeguard the constitutional order.
He accused the opposition of hijacking the parliamentary process and plunging the nation into crisis.
