SAN FRANCISCO, November 04, (THEWILL) – Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, were thrown into confusion and panic Tuesday morning as sporadic warning shots from the military sent shivers down the spines of the worried residents who thought Boko Haram gunmen had finally made their way into the capital.
Amid the confusion and not knowing what to make of the ear deafening gunshots, the apparently worried residents went after their children in the various private schools in the town, returning them home while many who were already on their way to work simply ran back as they scampered for safety.
However, the shooting which lasted for over 20 minutes, from about 7:20am to 7:40am, was later discovered to be mere warning shots from soldiers at the Giwa and Maimalari barracks , who were only demonstrating their preparedness to combat possible insurgent attack on the town.
Speaking on the development, a military source described it as a pre-emptive exercise meant to send a strong warning against threat of insurgent attacks on the town.
“Our troops are more than capable of defending Maiduguri,” the source assured, urging residents of the state capital to go about their normal business activities without fear.
