Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge has been named in England’s starting XI to face Germany at Wembley on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old had missed Friday’s 2-0 defeat by Chile with a foot injury and withdrew early from training on Monday.
“Sturridge is fine,” said England coach Roy Hodgson. “The only reason he came off in the training game was to give Rickie Lambert a go because there’s a good chance I want to see him.”
Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Joe Hart is back in goal.
Hart, who has been criticised for making several mistakes this season, was replaced by Celtic’s Fraser Forster for Friday’s defeat at Wembley by the South Americans.
“I am sure he will respond very well. He is a proud man and very pleased to be playing for England,” added Hodgson. “We have had no cause to doubt him in the qualifying games and also the Euros.”
Southampton’s Adam Lallana will start for the second successive game after making his international debut on Friday.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Adam playing again and I was happy with his performance on Friday.
“It’s important that he gets another chance.”
The last time England played Germany was at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, when Hodgson’s side suffered a 4-1 last-16 defeat.
Germany head into next year’s World Cup in Brazil as one of the favourites, but Hodgson says it is down to the England players to prove they are capable of matching the three-times World Cup winners.
“All the words in the world won’t make us better, it is what we do when we cross that white line and get on the pitch,” said Hodgson.
“There are a lot of experienced players in our team, we have it all to do, but they [Germany] have a lot to do as well.
“They are the favourites with Spain to win the World Cup, there is pressure on them in a different way. Our pressure is to prove we can be as good as them.”
Steven Gerrard will make his 108th international appearance, equalling the amount of appearances 1966 World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore made for England.
“I’m very proud. We are talking about a World Cup winner and an iconic figure. He was a hero to everyone in the country and to equal his record is a fantastic achievement,” said the England captain.
Germany boss Joachim Low is set to give some of his fringe players the chance to impress against England.
Borussia Dortmund’s 33-year-old goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller is expected to start while key men Mesut Ozil, Philip Lahm and Manuel Neuer will be rested.
Dortmund’s Marcel Schmelzer, 25, is set to replace 43-cap Marcel Jansen at left-back and the 24-year-old Sven Bender, also of Dortmund, should slot into midfield for Sami Khedira, who is recovering from knee ligament surgery.
Low said: “I need to experiment a bit and send a few players home who are already established.
“It is a deliberate acid test, not a “B team”, and this is certainly no lack of respect to our hosts.”
England XI to face Germany: Hart, Walker, Smalling, Jagielka, Cole, Gerrard (capt), Cleverley, Townsend, Rooney, Lallana and Sturridge.
