BEVERLY HILLS, January 10, (THEWILL) – A bomb explosion which rocked the Potiskum Divisional Police Station in Yobe State Saturday afternoon has claimed the lives of two persons.
Confirming the incident, a security operative, craving anonymity, told THEWILL that “a suspected Saloon Golf Car laden with explosive devices was arrested and brought to the Police station for investigation and when the car was being parked within the premises of the station, the blast went off around 3:15 killing two people on the spot.”
Potiskum , the largest commercial town in Yobe State, is located 100 kilometres west of Damaturu, the state capital.
The security operative disclosed that one of two victims of the blast was a Police Inspector serving in the command while the other is a civilian.
Corroborating the account of the security officer, a resident of the town, Abba Ibrahim, told THEWILL that a suspected suicide bomber was arrested in a vehicle around the Potiskum main market and was taken to the Divisional Police station in the centre of the town after which, according to him, “a loud bang was later heard within the premises of the police station.”
The commercial town has come under terrorist attacks in recent time and two of the most recent suicide attacks on the town involved the bombing at the Government Science Schools, Potiskum and the blast that rocked a procession of Muslim faithful while on Ashurah Day Celebration between October and November last year.
The Nigerian government has been battling insurgency by the Boko Haram, an Islamic terrorist group responsible for hundreds of deadly attacks mainly in northern Nigeria. The attacks have left over 20, 000 persons dead with several thousands displaced from their homes.
