…Confirms 33 Students Dead, 67 Injured
SAN FRANCISCO, November 10, (THEWILL) – Smarting from the suicide bombing that rocked a secondary school in Potiskum, Monday morning, the state Government has ordered the closure of all schools in the town pending the improvement of the security situation.
The order came as the state Commissioner Education, Alhaji Mohammed Lamin, confirmed that 33 students were killed in the suicide attack while 67 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The Commissioner said 41 of the 67 injured had been taken to the Federal Medical Centres in Nguru, Yobe State and Azare in Bauchi state.
Meanwhile, an angry mob of local residents prevented the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Markus Danladi, who visited Potiskum town along with the state Commissioner of Education, from getting to the scene of the bombing.
Danladi said security operatives have been advised to stay away from the scene of the blast to avoid a confrontation with the irate mob.
The Police chief however paid condolence visits to others in the town, calling on the Emirs to educate their subjects on the importance of security at this critical time.
The chairman, Yobe State council of chiefs, Alhaji Mohammadu Abali Ibn Idrisa, who is the Emir of Fika and his Potiskum counterpart, Alhaji Umaru Bubaram Ibn Wuriwa Bauya, informed the Police Commissioner that they have mobilised some elders in their areas to educate the mob on the need for peace and to allow the security operatives do their work.
It will be recalled that the leader of the Shia group in Potiskum , Mustapha Lawan Nasidi, last week accused the military of shooting his members after the blast that killed some of his members and several others.
