BEVERLY HILLS, August 09, (THEWILL) – Mr. Sunny Ofili, the Special Adviser on ICT to the Governor of Delta State and Publisher of The Times of Nigeria and Delta Herald died Saturday evening (local time) in a car crash near Asaba, the Delta State capital.
THEWILL gathered that the vehicle Ofili was travelling in alongside the Obi of Isele-Uku, rammed into a truck carrying granite and ignited, severely burning the bodies of the two occupants.
News of the incident has thrown the Uduaghan administration, Aniocha North Local Government Area and Isele-Uku into mourning.
Witnesses said the His Royal Majesty, Obi Henry Ezeagwunam was the driver of the SUV that rammed into the stationary truck. It was not clear at press time whether alcohol may have played any part in the fatal crash at Otulu Junction along the Benin-Asaba expressway.
The ill-fated vehicle, which was travelling to Asaba, the Delta State capital from Issele-Uku, reportedly ran into the truck with tag number EDO FUG 238 XA from behind at about 3pm local time.
Obi Ezeagwunam and Ofili had just monitored the primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to elect a chairmanship candidate for the October 25 council election in Isele-Uku, the capital of Aniocha North Local Government Area.
Tears flowed freely as a rescue team mostly made up of officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) tried to remove the charred bodies trapped in the vehicle.
Ofili had expressed interest to run for a seat at the state House of Assembly to represent Aniocha North constituency. He is survived by his wife, Lilian and three daughters, who are all presently in the United States on holiday.
