October 28, (THEWILL) — Nigeria have qualified for the next Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-1 draw with the Republic of Benin on Tuesday evening. The result at the MKO Abiola Stadium confirmed a 3-1 aggregate victory for the reigning African champions, who will defend their title at the tournament.
Ashleigh Plumptre scored her first goal for Nigeria in the 12th minute, heading home from a corner delivered by Esther Okoronkwo. The Super Falcons controlled possession during the opening period, keeping Benin confined to their own half and maintaining their advantage through to the interval.
Benin responded with greater urgency after the break, pressing forward in search of a goal. Their persistence paid off 10 minutes from the final whistle when they beat Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to draw level.
The Falcons held on despite late pressure from their opponents. Nigeria had established a comfortable position with a 2-0 first-leg victory, secured through goals from Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo.
The qualification extends Nigeria’s pursuit of consecutive WAFCON titles following their triumph in Morocco. The record-setters will now prepare for the upcoming tournament with their status amongst Africa’s elite nations confirmed.
