May 03, (THEWILL) – Many workers in Imo State have called on government at all levels to urgently address the economic challenges confronting them, including food insecurity, rising inflation, high transportation costs, and the soaring price of fuel.
During the 2024 May Day celebration held at Ndubuisi Kanu Square in Owerri, most civil servants approached by our correspondent declined to speak on record, possibly out of fear of being penalised by the state government for publicly expressing their grievances.
Like their counterparts across the country, Imo civil servants continue to grapple with the harsh economic realities marked by a high cost of living and widespread financial hardship.
Though seated in high spirits during the celebration, many workers were seen discussing the prevailing challenges affecting their welfare—issues Governor Hope Uzodimma had earlier pledged to address.
One civil servant, who spoke anonymously, commended the governor for the prompt payment of salaries but urged him to go further in alleviating their burden.
“We appreciate the governor for paying salaries regularly, but we are also appealing to him to address some other pressing issues affecting civil servants in the state,” the worker said.
Two other workers, Miss Ngozi and Miss Gladys, expressed mixed feelings about the occasion, noting that the current economic hardship had taken a serious toll on their livelihoods.
It will be recalled that Governor Uzodimma, in his speech at the event—after listening to the address presented by the state Labour Chairman—reassured workers of his commitment to tackling their concerns.
