June 24, (THEWILL) – As part of moves to restore lasting peace and fostering harmony in Taraba State, the Commander, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, has brokered a peace agreement between Tiv and Fulani stakeholders in Gassol Local Government Area.
Assistant Director, Army Public Relations 6 Brigade, Capt. Olubodunde Ooni, made this known in a statement made available to THEWILL in Jalingo on Monday.
According to the statement, the peace dialogue and symbolic signing of the peace pact was held at the 6 Brigade Headquarters in Jalingo.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including the Chairman of Gassol LGA, Hon. Abubakar Usman, traditional rulers, elders, and youth representatives from both communities, in response to growing tensions and lingering communal disputes in the area.
Brigadier General Uwa, while addressing the gathering, condemned the recurring cycle of violence and warned against jungle justice.
He emphasised that only lawful institutions have the right to enforce justice and urged all present to champion the cause of peace and development in their communities.
The Commander also commended the Gassol LGA Chairman for his leadership and efforts in mobilising stakeholders for the peace process.
After hours of deliberation, the two parties agreed to end hostilities, foster regular dialogue, avoid shielding criminals, and support security agencies with timely intelligence.
Speaking on behalf of the communities, Hon. Abubakar Usman praised the Army’s intervention and acknowledged the dedication of troops under 6 Brigade to keeping the area safe.
The initiative underscores the Nigerian Army’s growing commitment to non-kinetic conflict resolution, proving that dialogue and collaboration can pave the way for lasting peace.
