December 08, (THEWILL) — Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has postponed his formal defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) until January 2026, the state APC leadership confirmed on Sunday.
The governor had earlier indicated his imminent departure from the PDP during a meeting with party stakeholders at the Banquet Hall of TY Danjuma House in Jalingo, following reports first published by THEWILL on September 28, 2025, under the headline: “Quake in PDP: 4 More Govs to Dump Party for APC as Jonathan Seeks Alliance with ADC in Comeback Bid.”
THEWILL had also reported that Governor Kefas, who initially planned to formally join the APC on November 19, postponed the induction in a gesture of solidarity following the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
Speaking at a press conference in Jalingo, the State Chairman of the APC, Ibrahim Tukur, said party leadership agreed that January would be the most appropriate time for the governor’s official reception.
“December is already jam-packed with activities. We don’t want to drag people across the state when families are preparing for Christmas and the New Year. We have met as a party and agreed that January is the best time. Once a specific date is agreed upon, we will communicate it to the public”, he said.
Tukur further disclosed that Governor Kefas had already been admitted into the APC at the ward level.
“The governor wrote to his ward executives, and they have duly received him. As far as party records are concerned, Governor Kefas is now a bona fide member of the APC. What you are seeing is a natural realignment. Key stakeholders around the governor have joined him, and more are coming. There is absolutely no cause for alarm,” he added.
The defection wave has extended beyond the governor, with 15 members of the Taraba State House of Assembly, alongside the entire state executive council, having already switched allegiance to the APC.
The move signals a major political realignment in Taraba State, setting the stage for what analysts say could be a strengthened APC presence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
