April 16, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to the President-elect of the Republic of Benin, His Excellency Romuald Wadagni, following his emphatic victory in the presidential election held on April 12, 2026, describing the outcome as a reflection of the confidence the Beninese people have in his leadership, vision, and public service record.
Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin’s Minister of Finance, secured a decisive majority in the election, positioning him as the country’s President-elect amid widespread recognition of his technocratic background and governance experience.
In a formal congratulatory letter issued on Thursday, President Tinubu commended the peaceful conduct of the election and praised the democratic maturity of the Beninese electorate, noting that the transition marks a significant milestone in the country’s political history.
In his message, President Tinubu emphasized that the electoral outcome reflected the trust reposed in Wadagni’s leadership capacity and his record in public financial management.
“The victory reflects the trust the Beninese people have placed in your vision and your distinguished record of service as Minister of Finance,” Tinubu stated.
The Nigerian Leader further underscored the importance of democratic continuity in the sub-region, commending the Government and people of the Benin Republic for what he described as a peaceful and orderly electoral process.
“This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history,” Tinubu noted, adding that the successful conduct of the election demonstrated Benin’s resilience and commitment to democratic governance.
He also highlighted the enduring ties between both countries, stressing that Nigeria and Benin share deep historical, cultural, and economic linkages that must be strengthened for mutual prosperity.
“Our two nations share a long history of friendship, cultural ties, and cooperation,” he said, reaffirming Nigeria’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the incoming administration in areas of security, trade, and regional integration.
Tinubu specifically expressed optimism that both countries would continue to work closely within the frameworks of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) to promote peace, stability, and economic development across the region.
Romuald Wadagni, who emerged victorious in the April 12 poll, is widely regarded as a key figure in Benin’s economic reforms, having served as Minister of Finance before his election.
President Tinubu wished the President-elect success as he prepares to assume office, urging him to embrace the responsibilities ahead with wisdom and dedication.
