May 28, (THEWILL) – On Wednesday, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, declared open the formal event for the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The event, held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island, Lagos, brought together regional leaders, diplomats, and stakeholders to reflect on five decades of ECOWAS’s contributions to regional integration, peace, and economic development.
THEWILL earlier reported the ECOWAS Chairman, Bola Tinubu, arrived in Lagos on Tuesday for the event.
Dignitaries at the event include the President of Liberia, Joseph Boakai; President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray; former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd); Director General, ECOWAS Food & Cultural Festival, Amb. Prince Felix Ihonre; dignitaries from the African Union, the United Nations, and other multilateral organisations were also represented at the historic event.
Gowon, the only living founding father of ECOWAS, joined Tinubu to highlight the bloc’s achievements and challenges since its establishment in 1975.
The Golden Jubilee of the ECOWAS was officially launched in Accra, Ghana, on April 22, 2025.
