November 19, (THEWILL) — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended his planned official trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, following rising security concerns triggered by the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, in Kwara State.
The President was scheduled to depart Abuja on Wednesday for the 20th G20 Summit of Leaders in South Africa, with a subsequent visit to Angola for the 7th AU–EU Summit.
However, he shelved the journey after receiving disturbing intelligence reports from the affected states.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu elected to remain in the country to receive full security briefings as authorities intensify efforts to contain the crises.
Responding to an appeal from the Kwara State Governor, the President ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and across the Ekiti Local Government Area.
He also directed the police to track down and apprehend the perpetrators of Tuesday’s attack on church worshippers.
Tinubu is awaiting detailed reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi State to commiserate with families of the abducted students and evaluate the security situation on his behalf.
The Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services are also expected to provide updates on the Kwara incident.
Reiterating his directive to the security agencies, the President ordered that all necessary measures be taken to secure the release of the 24 kidnapped schoolgirls and ensure their safe return.
He emphasised that the safety of Nigerians remains the foremost priority of his administration.
