March 13, (THEWILL) – President Bola Tinubu has charged members of the Lagos State House of Assembly to unite and work with Speaker Mudashiru Obasa as leader of the Legislative Assembly.
THEWILL reports that the directive was part of the resolutions of a meeting held on Wednesday between the President and the lawmakers.
The Lagos legislative chamber erupted in crisis following the impeachment of Obasa and the election of Lasbat Mojisola Meranda as Speaker on January 13. However, a mediation meeting on March 2, returned Obasa as Speaker following the resignation of Meranda on Monday, March 3.
THEWILL recalls that despite Obasa’s reinstatement following intense political intervention by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Lagos State’s Governing Advisory Council (GAC), sources claimed that tensions continue to simmer among lawmakers.
On Wednesday, the 40-member House of Assembly that met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa declared their loyalty to the President, pledging to respect his peace pact.
While the lawmakers, including Obasa, declined to speak with newsmen, sources close to the meeting indicate that Tinubu called for unity, emphasising the importance of putting the interests of Lagos State above personal ambitions.
He urged lawmakers to support Obasa’s leadership to ensure the progress of the Assembly and the state as a whole and also directed Obasa to withdraw his suit against the Assembly.
According to one of those who attended the meeting, “everything has been resolved”. He also disclosed that some lawmakers apologised to Obasa over his earlier impeachment.
