March 12, (THEWILL) – Borussia Dortmund advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals following a 2-1 victory against Lille on Wednesday, completing a 3-2 aggregate win.
The German club overcame an early deficit when Jonathan David put the French side ahead with a shot that slipped through goalkeeper Gregor Kobel’s legs.
Dortmund equalised in the 54th minute through Emre Can, who converted from the penalty spot after Thomas Meunier fouled Julian Brandt.
The winning goal came from Beier, who found the top corner with an impressive strike after Karim Adeyemi had hit the woodwork, sending last season’s runners-up through to the next round.
The result means Dortmund will face Barcelona in the quarter-finals, continuing their European campaign.
This marks their ninth appearance at this stage of the competition and the first time they have reached consecutive quarter-finals since the 2012-2014 period.
For Lille, it was a disappointing end to their European journey despite earlier victories over Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid during the league phase.
Jonathan David did make history by becoming Lille’s all-time leading scorer in European competitions with 13 goals, surpassing Yusuf Yazici’s previous record of 12.
Serhou Guirassy provided the assist for Beier’s decisive goal, bringing his season tally to 14 goal involvements in the UCL (10 goals, four assists).
This equals Mohamed Salah’s record for most goal involvements by an African player in a single UCL campaign.
