February 28, (THEWILL) – The head of the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), Maheta Molango, has spoken out against football’s congested match schedule. He stated that the high volume of fixtures is not only a health risk for players but is also damaging the on-pitch product and entertainment value for fans.
With many teams competing in multiple competitions, players often face a gruelling schedule that allows little time for recovery and training between matches. Molango warned that this raises the risk of injuries and burnout while leaving footballers mentally and physically exhausted.
“The congested calendar is having a deleterious effect on performance levels and the wellbeing of players,” Molango said. He suggested it impacts clubs’ abilities to prepare properly, reduces opportunities to work on tactics and technical skills on the training ground and leads to subpar displays during fixtures.
Molango added that less preparation time means fans are getting a lower quality product with potentially tired teams simply going through the motions. With broadcast rights a huge source of revenue, Molango believes offering audiences stale, lacklustre football could damage commercial returns and fan engagement long-term.
Stakeholders like domestic leagues, European competitions and national FAs arrange crowded schedules that prioritise their own interests over player welfare. Molango argued that collective action is urgently required, saying: “It is beholden upon all of us to address a situation which has reached the point of jeopardising not just the business of football but the game itself.”
