February 21, (THEWILL) — At least two persons were killed on Friday during a police chase in the Alagbado area of Lagos State. The State Police Command has confirmed that the officers involved in the incident have been arrested and taken into custody.
The incident occurred along AIT Road, Alagbado, when policemen reportedly pursuing suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as “yahoo boys,” opened fire at a vehicle.
Stray bullets from the shooting allegedly hit two unsuspecting passersby riding on a motorcycle, leading to their deaths.
The command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, who disclosed the development in a post on X, noted that the officers involved in the “unfortunate shooting incident” had been detained on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh.
An eyewitness account shared by an X user, @YemiFirstSon, stated that the incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. near a filling station on Old Otta Road.
He alleged that the policemen attempted to stop a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation and shot at its tyres.
“While trying to shoot again, they shot two passengers on a bike passing by and ran away immediately, leaving the unconscious victims without aid until they gave up the ghost as they couldn’t get help,” he wrote.
The user added that a video showing the victims was too graphic to be posted on social media.
Reacting to the development, the Lagos State Police Command said the Commissioner of Police had ordered a thorough and intensive investigation into the incident.
The command also disclosed that additional security personnel had been deployed to the area to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“The officers involved in the unfortunate shooting incident that occurred today in Alagbado have been arrested and taken into custody.
“ The Commissioner of Police has ordered a comprehensive investigation, and the command assures the good people of Lagos State that justice will be served. The outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course,” the police said, adding that normalcy had been restored to the Alagbado area following the incident.
