May 11, (THEWILL) – Burkina Faso pulled off a stunning 2-1 victory over Nigeria at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers, on Thursday, to secure a place in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
Aboubacar Camara scored twice for the Junior Stallions to earn them a hard-fought win over their West African rivals. The result also saw Burkina Faso clinch the last remaining slot for the FIFA World Cup, a major achievement for the Stallions.
It was a bittersweet moment for the Golden Eaglets, who were eliminated from the tournament despite being favourites to win it. Burkina Faso’s victory was even more impressive given that Nigeria had beaten them with the same scoreline in the final of the WAFU Zone qualifiers.
Camara’s brace made all the difference for the Stallions, who kept their dream of winning their second title alive. Still, the game was a closely contested affair, with both teams creating several scoring opportunities. Nigeria was left to rue their missed chances, particularly in the first half, where they hit the woodwork twice.
Burkina Faso, on the other hand, made the most of their chances, and their clinical finishing proved to be the difference between the two sides.
