February 18, (THEWILL) — The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched a Dh1 billion Mother of the Nation Endowment for Orphans, aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable children and promoting social cohesion across the country.
Announced on Wednesday by the Endowments and Minors’ Funds Authority (Awqaf) under the patronage of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the initiative seeks to establish a sustainable funding source to support orphan care. Beyond providing essential resources, the programme promotes endowment as a tool for community development, encouraging citizens and residents to contribute to the welfare of those in need.
The campaign builds on the humanitarian legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who championed sustainable giving grounded in tolerance, generosity, and solidarity. It also reflects the values of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, and aligns with the Year of Family, a national initiative emphasising family cohesion and social balance.
Awqaf’s previous endowment campaign, launched during the Year of Community, successfully raised nearly Dh1 billion in just four weeks, with contributions from over 200,000 donors. Interested individuals and organisations can contribute via Awqaf’s official website.
The UAE is taking proactive measures to address demographic challenges, including a declining birth rate and an ageing population. Between 2015 and 2022, the Emirati birth rate fell by about 11 percent, while citizens aged 60 and older are projected to increase from 165,000 to two million by 2050.
To further strengthen awareness and support for families, the government plans initiatives and partnerships with citizens, residents, and private companies. The National Family Growth Agenda 2031 envisions the Emirati family at the heart of sustainable development, social balance, and national progress.
