June 02, (THEWILL) – Jose Mourinho, the manager of AS Roma, has been charged by UEFA for his use of “insulting/abusive language against a match official” during the Europa League final against Sevilla, on Wednesday.
The confrontations between Mourinho and EPL referee, Anthony Taylor, were numerous and marked by abusive behavior from Mourinho and his staff. Following the defeat to Sevilla in Budapest, footage surfaced on social media showing Mourinho directing a string of expletives toward the officials, criticising their performance and labelling it a “disgrace.”
In his post-match press conference, Mourinho continued his criticism of the officials, expressing his frustration with the refereeing in a European final, stating, “It was an intense, vibrant game with a referee who seemed Spanish. It was yellow, yellow, yellow all the time.”
The altercation extended beyond the match itself, as Taylor and his family faced harassment on their way home from the final. Videos circulating on social media depict airport security escorting Taylor and his group out of a cafe and into a secure area, as supporters hounded the referee after the ill-tempered final. Disturbingly, some clips show objects, including a chair and a bottle, being thrown in the direction of Taylor. Budapest Airport confirmed that criminal proceedings have been initiated against an individual charged with affray in connection with the incident.
Roma, rather than retracting their criticism of Taylor, reaffirmed their position. Tiago Pinto, the club’s general manager, said: “We don’t usually comment about these types of situations, but we’ve analysed both the most glaring incidents and those seemingly less evident, and it is clear that in disciplinary terms, the refereeing of the match was not balanced.”
UEFA has not only charged Jose Mourinho individually but also both Roma and Sevilla with various offenses, including fan behavior, throwing of objects, lighting of fireworks, acts of damage, crowd disturbances, and improper conduct of their respective teams. The consequences for these charges are yet to be determined.
